23rd June 2010 - A Tropical Wave located along 64W is expected to surge northwestward today and will dominate atmospheric conditions for the next few days. The system is expected to produce cloudy conditions, showers and thunderstorms. Brief periods of moderate to heavy rainfall and lightning are expected. Due to the already saturated soils, localized flooding and mudslides in steep areas can be expected.

Another Tropical Wave is observed to be strengthening near 40 West and is expected to reach the Territory over the upcoming weekend, creating showers and thunderstorms with a further possibility of local flooding. All residents are reminded to continue their monitoring of the weather conditions as this system may create flooding of homes, difficult driving conditions and squall-like conditions at sea.

Reduced visibility and ponding of water on roadways can be expected as well. All motorists are asked to be extremely careful on the roads; visibility may be limited. Rocks, other debris and standing waters that are deeper than expected may create dangerous driving conditions.

Incidents caused by the weather may be reported to the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Services at (284) 494-3473 on the weekend and to the Public Works Department (284) 494-2722 and the DDM (284) 468-4200 during the week.

The DDM will continue to monitor the weather conditions and provide updates, which can be viewed at www.bviddm.com.
