17th July 2010 -The Virgin Islands experienced quick passing showers and thunderstorms with gusty wind and heavy winds yesterday. These showers and thunderstorms were not enough to create any major flooding, however there were areas where flooding of roads were visible.
Another increase in moisture will create unstable weather conditions in the territory. Although most of this moisture is expected to stay south of the area, some of this moisture has the potential to interact with local heating effects and an upper level trough to create showers and thunderstorms across the territory. Some of these showers and thunderstorms may produce heavy rain and frequent lightening As showers and thunderstorms are expected to move quickly, rainfall accumulation is expected to be minimal however intense rainfall rates can create flood like conditions.
Later today into Sunday conditions are expected to be a bit drier as some of this moisture move to the northwest.
However come Sunday evening maybe through Monday or Tuesday, another surge in inclement weather may appear as another tropical wave passes the local area.
A moderate to fresh trade wind flow will continue across the Regional waters through at least Monday .maintaining locally rough and hazardous seas. Bands of showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds will continue to affect parts of the local waters through early tonight. For that reason a Small Craft Advisory is in effect until tonight.
Residents and visitors are reminded to exercise caution as flooded roadways can be hazardous while driving. In addition Mariners while operating small vessels should exercise caution on open waters due to squall like conditions in thunderstorms.
