Premier Hon. Ralph T. O´Neal said that Government will be awarding several petty contracts, alongside the general contract for the continuation of the construction of the new Peebles Hospital.
According to Premier O´Neal, they are weather-proofing the building and very soon the contractor will start work. "The plan is that there is one general contractor and other contracts will be given out, so there will be several other people working on different parts of the building, but the one contractor will be the overall man who will be responsible for the completion of the building."
Recently, Health Minister Hon. Dancia Penn stated that Cabinet has waived the tender process and decided that a contract be awarded to the local firm, James Todman Construction to weather-proof the new Peebles Hospital building. The package of works would include repairs to roof areas, drainage and rainwater collection systems, sealing of windows and doors, and other external finishes.
At the time, the Minister did not state how much this will cost the Government.
"In the meantime, urgent consideration has been given to the need to weather-proof the building to prevent any damage or deterioration that could be caused by water infiltration, particularly as we enter the 2010 Hurricane Season."
Minister Penn said that the weather-proofing of the building and the external works on the site will be done at the same time as the independent mechanical, electrical, plumbing, medical gases, and fire safety installations (MEP) testing works are being conducted.
On April 15, 2010 a 14 day notice of termination was issued to Carimex LLC, the former General Contractor for the new Peebles Hospital Project.
The Government terminated the contract with Carimex on the basis of its failure to fulfill several contractual obligations, including the provision of a suitable performance security and compliance with the employer´s instructions to remedy defective work. Carimex vacated the construction site on 30 April 2010.
