The Fire and Rescue Services Department increased their Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) response capacity with the purchase of new professional breathing apparatus sets. "The department received six sets of DagerMan PSS90 breathing apparatus, which will allow Fire Officers to operate in hazardous environments and in general rescue operations that involve any form of life threatening conditions," Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Mr. William Penn told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

"The moral of our officers have increased because they now have the capacity to perform their operational tasks without endangering their own life. Additionally, the department can meet its objectives and provide quality service to our customers," Mr. Penn stated. With this equipment officers can effectively perform rescues, fire suppression and other such duties the Deputy added.

The equipment consists of six DagerMan sets with quick release coupling and full comfort padding on both shoulders and waist belt. The components of the carrying system are compliant with heat and flame requirements as stipulated by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The sets also include oxygen, face masks and lung devices that will provide a stable consistent supply of air at all levels of demand and breathing rates. The new equipment will be stationed at the Road Town, Virgin Gorda and Anegada fire stations. The Fire and Rescue Services Department falls under the Ministry of Communications and Works and is committed to protecting life and property from the effects of fire and all other man-made and natural accidents and disasters.
