The Crime Prevention Unit in conjunction with the Police Training Division is providing training for Police Officers on identifying the features of counterfeit currencies and this week have extending briefing sessions to business and booth owners.
The initiative forms a part of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force crime prevention preparations for the festival season and part of measures to address concerns among residents and business owners.
The Chairperson of the BVI Festival Committee Mr. Colin Scatliffe expressed his interest in having booth owners and workers attend a briefing session with the Police to assist in the early detection of counterfeit currencies.
Head of the Crime Prevention Unit Inspector Patrick Harewood noted that the initiative will ensure that officers within the RVIPF are given insights into the many changes that have taken place with the genuine US currency, particularly with regards to the $20, $50 and $100 bills, as well as the unique features which counterfeiters often try to photocopy and pass as genuine currencies.
"Officers are now equipped with the skills needed to identify the differences between a genuine note and a counterfeit note and the correct use of aids such as detector pens, machines, the ultraviolet light or magnifying glasses which the force already possesses," Inspector Harewood added.
This training will allow officers the opportunity to be more responsive and responsible in the handling of suspicious currencies. This early response is aimed at discouraging the circulation of counterfeit currencies.
All suspected counterfeit bills confiscated by Police are subjected to final analysis at an overseas institution.
